There
are 800 kinds of these trees (or shrubs) in North
America. They are difficult to seperate into species
because of frequent cross-breeding. Hawthorns
seem to prefer growth in alkaline soils and are
most abundant in limestone areas. They often grow
on sunny abandoned fields and pastures. For some,
the Hawthorn is a desirable ornamental tree, while
for the others they are a weed. A few large mammals
(especially cattle) browse on the growth of the
Hawthorn, and various birds feed on the fruit.
