The Sugar Maple is Native to most of the northeastern U.S. It is the most important of the maples commercially. Maple syrup comes from the sap of this tree. The bark of the tree is gray with long irregular plates or ridges and may seem scaly. The leaves are 5 lobed and sometimes wavy serrate. They are also 3" to 5" wide and long.
