Wilderness Technology Summer 2002....what did you do for your summer?

Two students from H. M. Jackson High School take on the wilderness through the Upper Elwha Valley along with students from Lake Stevens High School, Truman High School, their teachers, a Naturalist, and an Olympic Park Ranger.

We hiked 30 miles round trip with 50 lb packs (some more and some less), following the original Press Expedition, doing land studies. We learned about the lands history in unconventional ways using skits, story telling, games and projects. We learned about the land a 'foot of earth' at a time and studied 200 foot transects. Scientific methods were used to catalog the findings. We now meet for another week to transform this information to a web site that the Olympic National Park can use.

Overall my role through this has been a helper. What do you need.....hmmm lets see what my survival vest has for you. It has been fun and I'm glad I did it!

I thank all those that made this possible, especially Lou August the director and inventor, Lisa Eschenbach our Park Ranger and David Zelenka our Naturalist and Web Guru.

We will continue our work this year in our web classes where we hope to partner with WTA sites to create web pages.

See you at school in the fall,

Maggie Thorleifson

H. M. Jackson Technology Instructor
