Common name: Black Crappie

Family: Sunfish

Species: Pomoxix nigromaculatus

Description: Black Crappies are greenish black with silvery green sides, the belly is silver, fins are green, and they have white spots. They grow up to 19 1/2 inches long.

Habitat: Black Crappie live in warm, clear streams, ponds, and lakes.

 

Range/migration: They have been stocked in streams and lakes across the United States.

Food: Insects, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish.

Reproduction: Crappie spawn in spring or early summer. Eggs are laid in round nests dug in areas where there is plant cover to protect the enst. Males guard the eggs and newly hatched young for about a month.

Enemies: Larger fish, humans, predatory birds
