Common name: Bluegill

Family:

Species: Lepomis macrochirus

Description: Bluegill may be distinguished from other sunfish by the dark spots at the base of the dorsal fin, vertical bars on their sides and relatively small mouth.

Habitat: The bluegill likes to live in clear warm pools of streams, lakes, ponds, and soughs, usually in shallow water with vegetation.

 

Range/migration:

Food: Bluegill will eat aquatic insects such as cadies flies. Insects are the favored food but they will take worms, snails and other small fish.

Reproduction: Bluegills are known to breed up to three times a year; the male Bluegills build the nest upon dirt or semi-rocky areas. Each female Bluegill can lay as many as 60,000 eggs.

Enemies: The bluegill enemies are large predaceous fishes and fish eating birds.
