Common name: Largemouth Bass

Family: Sunfish

Species: micro pterus salmoides

Description: The average length is about 14 inches. It is mostly grayish black with a dark irregular stripe along each side and a large upper jaw extending past the eye. It can reach weights of over 20 pounds.

Habitat: They live in smaller shallow lakes with good cover. In large deep lakes, bass live over structure well below the surface. You can find them in the shade of fallen trees, boulders, and stumps.

 

Range/migration: Largemouth Bass lives almost anywhere in the USA.

Food: Bass will attack and eat a great variety of creatures that share bass habitat including fish, insects, worms, reptiles, birds, frogs and small mammals. Bass eat only live creatures, not dead.

Reproduction: They start to spawn when they weight 1-3 pounds. Season starts at early spring. Female fish lays 2,000 to 25,000 eggs. Hatching time depends on the temperature of the water, but usually it lasts 5 to 10 days.

Enemies: Largemouth Bass doesn’t have many enemies. Perch, catfish, suckers and turtles are the biggest enemies of Largemouth Bass. Fishermen are also enemies of Largemouth Bass.
