Common name: Smallmouth Bass

Family:

Species: micropterus dolomieu

Description: It is close relative to the Largemouth Bass. They are greenish brown with verticle stripes while the largemouth stripe runs laterally. Also the mouth does not extend past the eye as on the largemouth. The smallmouth can grow to about seven pounds.

Habitat: The fish likes to live in 70 degree water, it is a warm water fish. Rocky bottom, clean, clear water areas. It lives in ponds, lakes and rivers. Likes cool clear water.

 

Range/migration: You can find Smallmouth Bass in every state in the US.

Food: They eat live prey, plankton, crayfish, minnows and insects

Reproduction: It begins to spawn in the late spring. Male builds the nest, female deposits the eggs in to the nest and the male looks after them. Hatching time is about 12 days.

Enemies: When they reach 15-18 inches they don’t have many enemies. When they are small, perch, catfish, suckers and turtles hunt them. Fishermen are also enemies of Smallmouth Bass.
