Common name: White Sturgeon

Family:

Species: Acipenser transmontanus

Description: It is a bottom dwelling fish. It has large cylindrical body, head, and mouth. The mouth is wide and toothless and has 4 barbels located in front. Instead of scales it has scutes for protection. Scutes are large modified scales and are used as a type of armor protection.

Habitat: They live in streams, rivers and marine waters during their lifecycle.

 

Range/migration: White sturgeon is found in North America from Ensenada, Mexico to Cook Inlet, Alaska. It is rear to find white sturgeon in Puget Sound or Washington.

Food: Young white sturgeon primarily feed on algae and insects. The older they get they start feeding on fish, shellfish, crayfish, and various invertebrates, clams shrimp, and amphipods.

Reproduction: White sturgeon may spawn multiple times during their life. They usually spawn every 4 to 11 years as they grow. The females can produce about 100,000 to several millions eggs.

Enemies: The building of dams.
